Reducing the rate of fistula in Africa: A view from Dr. Gueye
One of WAHA’s main collaborators, Dr. Serigne M. Gueye, urologist and fistula expert, was invited to the annual conference of Obstetrician and Gynecologists in Paris last week to give a speech about the African perspective on incontinence. We sat down with him at WAHA’s headquarters in Paris to discuss the progress of reducing maternal mortality and morbidity in the world.

Eclampsia: One of the leading causes of maternal deaths
Hypertensive disorder (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia) is the second most frequent cause of maternal mortality in the world, responsible for 18% of all maternal deaths (65,000 per year). The condition causes women to develop seizures during pregnancy or in the postpartum period, and can result in a coma, brain damage and maternal or infant death. As the eclamptic condition is unsafe for both a mother and her child, the condition requires prompt medical intervention to prevent further convulsions, control elevated blood pressure and, if possible, deliver the baby immediately.

Mauritania: Renowned fistula experts provide surgeries
WAHA supports the mission of two renowned urologists to bridge the gab in fistula treatment in Mauritania.
WAHA International is supporting a 13-day mission of two urologists and fistula experts to Mauritania where they will provide fistula surgeries and train medical staff. The doctors, Dr. Claude Dumurgier, a specialist in urology and fistula repair and an honorary member of the French Urology Association, and Dr. Ludovic Falandry, renowned urologist, have carried out more than 11 missions to Mauritania since 2005.

Maternity: a musical cartoon - Maternité: un dessin animé musical
(French below) A lively cartoon music video inspired by real stories of women who faced enormous obstacles to access care during childbirth. The song 'Maternity' was written and produced by Douman, a Senegalese musician, and the drawings are by French satirical cartoonist Rash Brax. Photos used as backgrounds and props were taken in Somalia, Ethiopia, Senegal and Nigeria, in maternal health projects WAHA is involved with. Ce dessin animé, inspiré d'histoires vraies, raconte les difficultés rencontrées par beaucoup de femmes pour recevoir les soins dont elles ont besoin pour accoucher en toute sécurité. La musique "Maternité" est écrite et produite par Douman, musicien sénégalais, et les dessins sont du dessinateur satirique Rash Brax. Les photos utilisées en arrière plan ont été prises en Somalie, Ethiopie, Sénégal et au Nigeria au cours de projets mis en place par WAHA International pour améliorer l'accès aux services de santé maternelle.
