No pesticides and chemical fertilizers means less risk for farmers and more biodiversity. Better soil management with organic agriculture also means lower CO2 emissions. And your money supports environmentally responsible enterprises, rather than conventional agribusinesses.
As is generally the case around Europe, organic food is becoming easier to find in Brussels. 17% of Belgian families regularly buy organic food, 85% if you consider Flanders only!
You’ll find organic food marked as Bio in Belgium. In fact even if the word Bio in itself is not a guarantee, food producers are not allowed to use the term on non-organic food. This makes it easier for you to make out organic products for non-organic ones.
Below, you’ll find a map of local bio shops and info on buying organic food in supermarkets.
Bio Shops
Brussels has a number of small organic food shops. These shops are the vanguard of organic food and agriculture and often have a friendly and local atmosphere. You’ll find much more than food at these shops: advice, information on local events and organisations, non food products etc… Your local bio shop is also a great place to meet like-minded people and get in touch with the local sustainability scene!

Bioguide.be (in French only) is a great place to start exploring grass-root organic Brussels.
Supermarkets
Will one could argue of the sustainability of shopping at supermarkets, it is a fact that many of us still see them as more convenient. Most supermarket and hard discount chains in Brussels now offer a range of organic dry food, sometimes even vegetables and fruit, but more rarely meat.
European Organic Farming Logo
European Organic Farming Logo
All organic food in the European Union is now marked by the European Organic Farming Logo (see left). This logo might be associated with older country-specific logos. Just look for the logo at your local supermarket … it guarantees that the food you are buying is organic.
To match their marketing strategies, supermarket chains have also created sub-brands for some of their organic products. Unlike the European logo, these brands do guarantee anything, they are just commercial brands. Their advantage is that they are easy to spot:
Colruyt has been at the fore front of organic food distribution in Belgium. Their Bio-time brand is well developed.
Carrefour/GB has developed the Carrefour Bio brand.
Cora has Nature Bio.
Delhaize also has a specific brand, called Bio.
Home Deliveries
Vegetable Boxes are great if you’re looking for home deliveries.
